Writer/director Ester Martin Bergsmark’s (She Male Snails, 2012) second feature is a raw, moving and very visual story about identity, sexuality, and the destructive forces one must battle before finding that inner strength.
Sebastian (a mesmerizing Saga Becker) has found a place in a grey area in between genders, and his female altar-ego Ellie. Despite having friends, there is loneliness.
When he meets Andreas, the attraction is immediate and mutual, resulting in a very intense affair. They dream of going away together, but Andreas’ struggle with loving someone of the same sex takes the relationship towards the end. As Andreas fades, Sebastian slowly feels the more confident woman inside him emerge and take hold as a more dominant identity.
Bergsmark co-wrote the script with She Male Snails co-star Eli Levén, who also wrote the novel the film is based on.
Saga Becker became the first ever trans person to win the Swedish Guldbagge award for her role as Sebastian/Ellie, and deservedly so. (BY)
