English:

Chakra (Sarm Heng), a 14-year old Cambodian boy, works in the rice fields with his family. He lives in a small hut with his parents and many siblings, where it soon is apparent that the relationship with his father is difficult. One day a friend of Chakra tells him about work in a factory where he could make more money. Wanting to escape his family’s poverty, Chakra decides to go on his own. However, he ends up in the hands of traffickers and is sold off to a Thai captain of a fishing vessel, who’s unpredictable, cruel and violent behaviour leads to a struggle for status onboard, yet mostly a struggle for freedom.

This is the first feature film by Australian filmmaker Rodd Rathjen, who’s film had its world premiere at the Berlinale 2019. The film deals with the growing issue of modern-day slavery and is not bashful in giving us a close look into many people’s reality today.

Leikstjórin Desiree Akhavan gjørdi vart við seg við sínum fyrsta filmi Appropriate Behavior (Opening Night Film, Oslo/Fusion 2014), um eina unga tvíkynda kvinnu í New York City. Filmurin varð væl móttikin av ummælarum og nevndur ein av bestu filmum í 2014 av sjálvari Lenu Dunham. The Miseducation of Cameron Post tók Sundance á bóli fyrr í ár og hevur fingið orðini “kollveltandi” og “beinrakin” við sær á vegnum frá altjóða ummælarum.

English:

We’re at the beginning of the 1990s, where we meet Cameron. She is in high school and is in love with another female student. When they are caught in an intimate moment at prom, she is sent to a “pray the gay away” camp. Here she teams up with two other outcasts; Adam, who is not bound to the notion that you only have one gender, and a girl who calls herself “Jane Fonda”. Director Desiree Akhavan popped up on many people’s radar with her debut feature Appropriate Behavior (Opening Night Film, Oslo/Fusion 2014), about a young bisexual woman in New York City. The film was well-received by critics and was mentioned by none other than Lena Dunham as one of the best films of that year. Her second feature took Sundance by storm earlier this year and has been called everything from “revolutionary” to “pitch-perfect” by international critics.

Winner of the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic at Sundance 2018.

GIRL

12/OKTOBER 16.00

Leikstjóri/Director: Lukas Dhont

2018 | Belgium | 105 min

Franskt, flamskt | Enskir undirtekstir

French, Flemish | English subtitles

Leikarar/Cast: Victor Polster, Arieh Worthalter, Oliver Bodart

Aldursmark/ Age Limit: 15

Føroyskt:

Tannárini eru eitt trupult lívsskeið merkt við óvissu og trýsti. Tað verður 15 ára gamla Lara noydd at ásanna. Hon er tvørkynd og hevur ein stóran lívsdreym: At gerast balletdansarinna. Saman við pápanum og yngra beiggjanum flytur hon úr heimbýnum at lesa á einum av mest viðurkendu dansiskúlunum í Belgia. Samanborið við aðrar filmar, sum lýsa tannárini hjá tvørkyndum, har spenningurin ofta spyrst burtur úr samfelagsligum trýsti ella samanbrestir við familju og næstingar, er Girl øðrvísi: Hann snýr seg um innara stríðið hjá Laru.

Leikstjórin Lukas Dhont hevur framleitt ein ótrúliga hugtakandi debut film, sum fekk framúrskarandi ummæli, tá ið hann var frumsýndur á Cannes 2018. Nógvir tvørkyndir og queer rithøvundar hava tó funnist at filminum; serliga lýsingini av at vera ónøgdur við tað kyn, ein er føddur við.

English:

The teens are a turbulent time filled with uncertainty and pressure, this also the case for 15-year-old Lara. She is trans and has one big dream in life: To become a ballerina. Along with her father and younger brother she moves to a new city to study at one of Belgium’s most acclaimed dance academies. Compared to other films tackling teenage trans themes, the conflict in Girl is not coming from the societal pressures or the people around Lara, but from internal struggles.

Director Lukas Dhont has made an incredibly impressive debut feature and the film received glowing reviews when it premiered in Cannes 2018. The film has also been criticized by many trans and queer writers, in particular the description of gender dysphoria.

RAFIKI

12/OKTOBER 18:00

Leikstjóri/Director: Wanuri Kahiu

2018 | Kenja, Suðurafrika, Noreg, Frakland, Libanon, Niðurlond, Týskland, USA | 85 min

Swahili, enskt | Enskir undirtekstir

Tað er kærleiki í luftini, tá tær báðar Kena (Samantha Mugatsia) og Zaki (Sheila Munyiva) hittast. Saman megna tær at skapa teirra egnu, lítlu verð og at stuðla dreymunum og framtíðarætlanum hjá hvør aðrari. Men tá ið veruleikin trokar seg á, mugu genturnar velja annað: Eydnu ella trygd.

Vakra filmslistin tekur teg á ferð í gjøgnum eina forbjóðaða kærleikssøgu við gleði og hjartasorg í nútímans Kenja.

Rafiki varð bannaður í Kenja, inntil hægstirættur setti forboðið úr gildi í sjey dagar fyri, at filmurin kundi fáa rætt til at luttaka í Academy Awards kappingini.

English:

When the two girls Kena (Samantha Mugatsia) and Zaki (Sheila Munyiva) meet, they can’t help but fall in love. Homosexuality being illegal in Kenya, they can’t express their love for each other in public, and in addition, their families are political rivals. Together they find ways to create their own world, supporting each other in their dreams and aspirations. But when reality hits, the girls are forced to choose between happiness or safety.

The beautiful cinematography takes you on a journey through a forbidden, young love story with joys and heartbreaks in modern-day Kenya.
